A fantastic opportunity for the team to ply some competitive Lacrosse matches at the rescheduled Nationals Schools Lacrosse Championships.
First match was off to a good start against Guildford High School, with Clemmie scoring early in the first half. The attack moved well but had to face a strong defence and change their movement around goal to suit this. Jasmine and Lily H were integral in creating space and opportunities around goal and Samantha's strong defence also a key element. Guildford's attack were fierce but our defence put up a strong fight with Sariya leading the crash calls. Final score was a respectable 3-1 to Guildford High.
The second match was against the renewed St Catherine's but the Marlborough team were not fazed, giving 100% from the offset. The midfield won the first draw and a lovely assist from Clemmie to Lily H almost resulted in a very first early goal here. The chance wasn't successful but Mariella was able to make this right shortly after for a 1-0 Marlborough lead. St Catherine's followed this strongly as they got in to their stride, but the Marlborough defence did their best to apply the pressure and keep them out of the fan. 2-1 to St Catherines at half time. In the second half, the play was competitive, with both teams fighting hard for possession but with some fabulous defence on show, neither could convert a further goal. That is until in the final minute, Marlborough knew they needed a goal and Lily H took this responsibility upon herself, driving down the left hand side of the fan and despite tripping and with defenders in front of her, managed to get a successful shot on goal just before the end of the match making it a 2-2 draw.
The third match of the day saw a change of scenery, playing North London Collegiate School on the astroturf. Despite some strong midfield play from Rosie and Chloe N and some good movement from Eliza and Mariella in attack, only Amelie managed to score in the first half with a 1-1 draw at half time. The second half was much of the same, with the challenge of the ball rolling faster on the flat astroturf and tiredness setting in but Clemmie managed to score for Marlborough, with the final score of a 2-2 draw.
The final group match was against St Helen and St Katherine's, a school we have played successfully against twice this season. However, tiredness has set in and despite some brilliant saves from Alexis and good movement and drives from the midfield, Marlborough couldn't stop their fierce attack and only managed to get one goal safely in to the back of the net with a final score of 2-1 to SHSK.
As only 8 teams made it through the the knockouts, we didn't progress any further. We finished the day with a friendly match with Sherborne Girls Schools showing much tactical knowledge and skills from the Marlborough team in a competitive fixture, finishing with a Marlborough win.
